Journey Beyond to acquire Kakadu hotel

Growing visitor economy operator Journey Beyond is set to purchase the Crocodile Hotel located within the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park.

Shaped like a crocodile, the 110-room hotel, currently operating under Accor’s Mercure brand, has three meeting spaces with capacity for up to 250 in theatre or 160 in banquet in the largest space.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome the Crocodile Hotel to the group,” said Journey Beyond’s CEO, Chris Tallent.

“This property is more than just a place to stay; it is a gateway to the heart of Kakadu.

“With significant investment planned for the property, we look forward to building awareness and growing demand whilst honouring its heritage and delivering the exceptional experience and quality that our guests expect.”

This is the second significant recent transaction for Journey Beyond in the Northern Territory, with the group acquiring operations at Ayers Rock Resort at Uluru in Central Australia earlier this year, after purchasing Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia – now simply Voyages Tourism Australia – from the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation.

The pending sale of the Crocodile Hotel has been endorsed by the Traditional Owners of the leased land on which the property stands.

“This is a positive step in the delivery of the Mirarr Jabiru Masterplan which sees Jabiru as a key North Australian location for ecofriendly tourism, active outdoor tourism and Indigenous cultural tourism,” said the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation Jabiru Town, which manages the lease of the land on behalf of the Mirarr Traditional Owners.

Journey Beyond’s purchase is anticipated to be complete early next month, with a change in management suggested in Journey Beyond’s media statement announcing the acquisition.

Kakadu National Park is located under two hours’ drive from Darwin.
