The airline will operate two flights per week between Western Sydney and Ho Chi Minh City to begin with, departing Sundays and Wednesdays from January 10. In March Vietjet will increase services on the route to three per week.
Vietjet Thailand, a joint venture with the Vietnamese airline is also set to fly from Western Sydney starting November next year, subject to regulatory approval, with four return flights a week planned between Western Sydney and Bangkok in Thailand.
Bangkok is a major business events hub, while Vietnam is also rising as a business events destination. Flights out of Western Sydney to the two countries will enable delegates to fly to events in either Asian nation as well as bringing delegates from Asia to events in Australia.
Although Vietjet is known as a low-cost carrier, it does offer a business class cabin.
“Vietnam is an incredibly popular destination for Aussie travellers – in 2025 alone more than half a million people travelled between New South Wales and Vietnam,” said WSI CEO, Simon Hickey.
“Add to that, Western Sydney is one of the nation’s most diverse and rapidly growing regions that is proudly home to more than half of Greater Sydney’s Vietnamese population – over 70,000 people – who regularly visit friends and relatives.
The new flights between Vietnam and Western Sydney have received support from the $16 million Western Sydney International Take-Off Fund, jointly funded by the airport and the NSW Government.
“Becoming one of the first airlines to operate at this new airport reinforces Vietjet’s strategy of pioneering the expansion of its international network while strengthening connectivity between Vietnam and Australia,” said the airline’s CEO, Nguyen Thanh Son.
“We believe the new route will further boost tourism, trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges between our two countries, creating more jobs and contributing to local economic growth.
“It will also provide passengers with more convenient, high-quality, and affordable travel options.”
The first flights from Western Sydney International are less than 100 days from take-off, with the first domestic flight to depart on Sunday October 25 to the Gold Coast on Jetstar, followed by the first international flight on October 26 to Auckland via Air New Zealand.
The announcement of the new Western Sydney-Vietnam connection has been welcomed by the expanding business events venue, Cabravale Club Resort, located in Sydney’s southwest, within one of Australia’s largest Vietnamese communities.
