Crystalbrook Collection Hotels and Resorts has promoted its longstanding staffer Carl Taranto to group director of hotel operations and recruited Tim Quarm as area general manager for Crystalbrook in Cairns, where the hotel groups first three hotels are located.
Taranto has been with Crystalbrook for more than eight years, holding a variety of roles, including as pre-opening general manager for three Crystalbrook properties – Crytalbrook Riley and Crystalbrook Bailey in Cairns and Crystalbrook Kingsley in Newcastle. Most recently he was area general manager for Cairns, where the Crystalbrook portfolio also includes Crystalbrook Flynn and comprises 877 five-star rooms in total.
In his new role, Taranto will also look after Crystalbrook Kingsley as its general manager.
“It’s been a privilege to help grow the business and work alongside such passionate teams across the portfolio,” said Taranto.
“As we continue to expand, I’m looking forward to supporting our hotels to deliver exceptional guest experiences while building on the culture and values that make Crystalbrook Collection unique.”

Stepping into Taranto’s existing role in Cairns is Quarm, who is returning to Australia to take up the position, bringing with him three decades of experience, much of it international.
“Crystalbrook’s hotels have built a strong reputation for delivering distinctive guest experiences, and I’m looking forward to working with the talented local teams to build on that success,” said Quarm.
“Great hospitality starts with great people, and I’m excited to support the continued growth of the Cairns properties and the wider business.”
Looking forward, Crystalbrook has two more properties in the pipeline, due to open this year and next.
Crystalbrook Sam in Adelaide is eyeing a 2026 opening, recently announcing the hotel’s first general manager, while Crystalbrook Aurora in Canberra is slated to open in 2027.
