Ground has been broken on the new-build hotel, which will be located close to Flemington Racecourse, home of the Melbourne Cup.

The 97-key apartment hotel is expected to open in February 2028.

“Flemington is a name people immediately connect with Melbourne,” said David Mansfield, the managing director for The Ascott Limited in Australasia, which owns the Oakwood brand.

“Having the racecourse next door gives this property a real sense of place, and we want that character to come through in the guest experience.

“Oakwood is about the comforts of home, backed by thoughtful hospitality that blends style with practical amenities for the modern traveller.

“Whether guests are visiting for business, a race meeting or time away, we want them to feel settled from the moment they arrive.”

When not hosting Australia’s most famous horse race, Flemington Racecourse can service business events across a variety of spaces.

Oakwood Flemington Melbourne will join two other Oakwood properties in Melbourne when it makes its debut in 2028, with Australia’s first Oakwood based just behind Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, while a second Oakwood in the outer Melbourne suburb of Epping opened this week.

The brand is also in the process of expanding beyond Melbourne, with an Oakwood in the works for Adelaide, expected to open late next year.

The Ascott Limited is expanding its footprint across its other brands in Australia too – Quest Southport opened on the Gold Coast in June while Quest Canberra Dickson opened in August, as did Citadines Elizabeth Street Pier Hobart, while ground has been broken on another Quest in South Australia.
