A trio of architecture firms has been awarded the contract to design the stadium in Brisbane’s Victoria Park that will host the opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics program at Brisbane’s Olympic Games in 2032.

The winning consortium of architects comprises two Australian companies, COX and Hassell, and Japanese firm Azusa Sekkei.

COX and Hassell both worked on Optus Stadium in Perth, which was been named as the world’s most beautiful stadium in 2019. Each of the Australian firms are prolific in their own right, with Hassell having worked on ICC Sydney while COX was contributed to Western Sydney International Airport.

Meanwhile, the Japanese business has worked on 120 stadium projects around the world.

The three architects will be backed up by engineering groups Arup and sbp, who will contribute their expertise to the stadium’s roof design.

“Inspired by the iconic Queenslander, this stadium will be a worthy home for the world’s best athletes, talented performers and excited spectators during the Games,” said Australia’s infrastructure minister, Catherine King.

“The new Brisbane Stadium promises to become a landmark venue for the city as its home of global sporting events and international concerts, as well as [a] home ground for local sports stars the Brisbane Lions, Queensland Bulls and Brisbane Heat for years to come.

“GIICA [Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority] will now commence early design work, alongside project validation work, to ensure the new stadium can be delivered on time and on budget, ready for 2032.”

Chair of GIICA, Stephen Conry AM, said “visionary design” as well as innovation and teamwork were sought when selecting the architects for the stadium.

“The track record of COX, Hassell and Azusa Sekkei made them an outstanding choice as principal architect for Brisbane Stadium,” said Conry.

“The Games will provide an incredible opportunity for our city and our state on the world stage and the designs and approach outlined by COX, Hassell and Azusa Sekkei will deliver an iconic Brisbane Stadium that all Queenslanders will be proud to call our own.

“The selected team possess the appropriate experience in stadium design, alongside outstanding local knowledge and placemaking expertise, plus the added global resources that will be required for a project of this significance.”
