An Avani has opened on the Sunshine Coast in a major milestone for the destination and there’s a hotel development slated for the airport.

Avani hotel opens in Mooloolaba

The Avani Mooloolaba Beach Hotel opened today on the Sunshine Coast, adding 180 premium hotel rooms to the local hotel stock, alongside more event space.

The hotel has a dedicated event floor, offering five spaces and capacity to host events with up to 300 attendees.

The hotel is owned and operated by KPAT Hotels, which is based in Queensland, under a franchise agreement with Minor Hotels.

“There has been ongoing discussion about the need for new hotel development in Queensland, particularly in the lead-up to 2032,” said KPAT Hotels managing director, Kenneth Wagner.

“This project demonstrates that delivery is possible if you are prepared to look at processes and do things differently and re-examine the delivery model.

“As a Queensland-based developer-builder-owner-operator, we have invested with a long-term view of the Sunshine Coast. This is about strengthening the region’s ability to attract higher-yield leisure travellers, business events and year-round visitation.”

The Avani hotel is the first premium, internationally branded hotel to be built on the Sunshine Coast in more than 40 years.

The hotel is located a block back from the beach and boasts water views.

Alongside rooms and event space, the hotel has a pool, a lobby bar and a rooftop restaurant.

Airport hotel in the works for the Sunshine Coast

Expressions of interest are now open to develop and own a hotel close to the terminal at Sunshine Coast Airport.

With the EOI process being managed by CBRE, the airport is seeking to have a 4-4.5 star hotel product within its precinct.

The call for hotel developers comes as Sunshine Coast Airport undergoes a $170 million expansion, which will double the size of the terminal and bump up airline capacity by 40 per cent.

“This is a unique opportunity for experienced developers and operators to partner with us in shaping the future of the airport and the region more broadly,” Sunshine Coast Airport CEO, Chris Mills

“As passenger numbers continue to grow, we see strong demand for high-quality, conveniently located accommodation.

“We are seeking a proponent who can deliver an outstanding hotel offering that complements our airport and enhances the traveller experience.

“With the terminal expansion project works well underway, now is the right time to look to the next major development in the airport precinct.

“We know there is an undersupply of accommodation options for travellers to our region, with more than 2,000 new hotel rooms needed before the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032.”

“This development will help fill a gap in the market and offer greater choice for travellers.”

Expressions of interest close May 27.
