Located just off Palm Cove, between Cairns and Port Douglas, the island used to be home to a luxury resort, but this been closed for more than six years and has reportedly fallen into a state of disrepair.
Starting in 2023, the Queensland Government undertook successful court action to strip the island’s leaseholder, Hong Kong businessman Benny Wu, of the lease, after years of negotiations to reopen the resort came to nothing.
“The Crisafulli Government is determined to see Double Island become a vibrant tourism asset to support hundreds of jobs across the Far North once more,” said Queensland’s minister for natural resources and mines, Dale Last.
“With the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games around the corner, this is a unique opportunity for a tourism operator who has the vision to transform Double Island into a world class destination once again.
“We need the right operator with a bold and forward-looking vision to ensure this gem in the Far North’s tourism crown lives up to its full potential.”
CBRE is handling the sale of the lease on behalf of the government for the 16.2ha island. Expressions of interest close on May 9.
The property group is positioning it as a site for a potential luxury resort, glamping or wellness resort and as an events host.
