Destinations Khao Yai and Udon Thani in Northeast Thailand are beckoning meeting and incentive travel organisers and planners venturing beyond Bangkok.

Current travel time from Bangkok to Khao Yai of just over two hours by road may be halved when a new motorway opens around the end of 2026, making it viable as a stand-alone destination or as a two-to-three-night extension for business events programs.

“Through strong partnership with the Khao Yai Tourism Association (KYTA), we have an ecosystem for groups to maximise convenience, experience and impact for their business events held in Khao Yai,” said Supawan Teerarat, president of Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB).

She highlighted premium wellness, inspiring teambuilding and organic and locally-sourced gastronomy as key draws for the destination.

Khao Yai National Park is a World Heritage site and a top attraction for wildlife, birdwatching, night safaris and visiting natural springs and waterfalls.

Khao Sam Sip Sang, part of Khorat UNESCO Global Geopark, offers a geological landscape of unique ‘potholes’ and prehistoric fossils along with community engagement.

Other activities include farm visits, agritourism and culinary experiences ranging from cooking classes in local restaurants to vineyard tours with wine tasting – Australians may discover Thai Geographical Indication-certified wines.

KYTA suggested farm-to-table masterclasses that highlight sustainability and include artistic plating or pairing mango sticky rice dessert with local herbal teas and regional boutique dessert wines as culinary experiences for groups.

“As the gateway to Isan [the Northeast Thailand region], Khao Yai holds immense potential, particularly in the green MICE sector,” said Panchana Vatanasathien, president of KYTA.

“Khao Yai is well-positioned to host low-carbon events, with serene natural surroundings strengthening our appeal to meeting and incentive groups seeking tranquil, sustainable and experiential destinations,” she added.

Accommodation options include international brands such as InterContinental, Mövenpick, Courtyard by Marriott and Dusit. Premium Thai resorts also house groups with varying capacities, budgets and preferences.

While small, high-end Thai resorts may allow buyouts for exclusive corporate retreats and incentive programs, booking six to 12 months ahead is advised for the November to February peak season.

Udon Thani, a one-hour flight from Bangkok, sees 10 return flights daily by five airlines. This will double during the International Horticultural Expo from November through to mid-March 2027.

The Expo will be held in the 165ha Nong Dae Wetland about 10km from the city centre. Themed “Diversity of Life Connecting People, Water and Plants for Sustainable Living”, there will be six exhibition zones, nine landmarks and eight engaging activities.

More than 10 four-star-equivalent hotels with meeting spaces are in and near the city centre, some with 150 to 260 guest rooms.

A two- or three-day itinerary may comprise the Expo and a visit to Ban Non Kok community to learn textile dyeing with lotus and marigold flowers and hand-woven fabrics, followed by an authentic local lunch.

Another attraction is the World Heritage site Ban Chiang, featuring 3,000-year-old pottery with unique-patterned designs. Large replicas decorate part of the Expo grounds.
