Carruthers was brought in soon after Blackstone acquired the integrated resort operator, starting with the business in September 2022.
Former CEO of Crown Perth, David Tsai, who was recently promoted to president and chief operating officer for the group, has stepped in as acting CEO.
During Carruthers’ time with Crown Resorts, the business has been returned to suitability to hold casino licences in both Melbourne and Sydney. However the business also confirmed earlier this year that it would shed around 1,000 staff across the country.
“It has been a privilege to work alongside Ciarán during this critical period of transformation and remediation which has resulted in Crown retaining its licence to operate in both Victoria and New South Wales, and Western Australia well progressed,” said Crown Resorts’ new board chair John Borghetti.
“Under Ciarán’s leadership, Crown has achieved critical milestones including a whole of business transformation and remediation program, the introduction of cashless gaming, mandatory carded play and the successful implementation of its world leading Crown PlaySafe harm minimisation program, which has resulted in Crown’s properties becoming the safest places for gaming in the world.
“We remain focused on turning this company into a world-class resort and entertainment business, which is positioned to thrive long into the future. We look forward to a smooth transition with Ciarán in the coming months,” he said.
Aside from its gaming floors, Crown controls a significant inventory of luxury hotel rooms and event space in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.
“It has been my privilege to lead the committed and talented team at Crown Resorts, but I feel now is an appropriate time after two and a half years of intensive transformation work to pursue other opportunities and interests,” said Carruthers of his departure.
“I am very pleased to hand over a stronger, compliant and transformed business to its next leader. There is more work to do, but I am very proud of what we have achieved as a team.”
