Melbourne will host the world congress for the Universal Esperanto Association in 2027.

Esperanto is designed to be a universal second language to enable communication across nations which speak a myriad of different languages.

The association’s conference is the largest yearly gathering of Esperantists in the world.

Melbourne Convention Bureau secured the event in collaboration with the Australian Esperanto Association and with support from both the Victorian Government and Australia’s national business events subvention fund managed by Tourism Australia.

The conference will be held at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre next July and is expected to attract 800 delegates. The conference is valued at $8 million for Victoria.

“Melbourne’s cultural diversity, international outlook and strong local Esperanto community make it an ideal host city for our global gathering,” said Universal Esperanto Association president Fernando Mais Jr.

Meanwhile, Australian Esperanto Association’s president, Sandor Horvath, said: “After 29 years the Australian Esperanto Association is thrilled to host the World Esperanto Congress for the second time on our continent.

“We are confident that the event, based on the neutral, easy to learn language Esperanto, will strengthen the connection between the people of Australia and people of the wider world.”

Melbourne Convention Bureau chief executive, Julia Swanson, said the conference was a “tremendous opportunity”.

“Welcoming the World Congress of Universal Esperanto Association to Melbourne is a tremendous opportunity for our city to showcase its globally renowned cultural vibrancy and inclusive spirit.

“As only the second Esperanto World Congress ever held in Oceania, this event highlights Melbourne’s standing as a truly international destination where language, culture and community come together.”
