Melbourne will host the International Conference on Neural Information Processing (ICONIP) in 2026.

The meeting is the annual meeting for the Asia Pacific Neural Network Society (APNNS). The 2025 event has just wrapped up in Okinawa, Japan, and was held in Auckland in 2024.

To be hosted by Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, the conference is expected to draw 800 delegates from fields including data analytics, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, brain-machine interfaces.

The event delves into research areas including artificial intelligence, machine learning and neural information processing.

“Hosting this conference is another chance to position our state at the forefront of medical research and innovation,” said Victoria’s tourism and major events minister, Steve Dimopoulos.

“These events attract global experts and provide a big boost to local businesses.”

Melbourne Convention Bureau worked with the APNNS and Deakin University to bring the event to Melbourne.

“ICONIP 2026 presents a landmark opportunity to bring together global leaders in neural information processing and intelligent cognitive systems,” said Deakin University Associate Professor Asim Bhatti.

“Hosting this prestigious conference in Melbourne highlights Australia’s growing leadership and commitment to brain-inspired computing, artificial intelligence and cognitive performance research.

“The conference will unite researchers, innovators, and practitioners from diverse disciplines to share insights, drive breakthroughs in neural networks, promote ethical and responsible AI, and help shape the future of intelligent systems for the benefit of the society.”
