Called Neighbour-Free Seating, the new option for economy travellers allows them to put in a bid – as low as $30, according to the airline – to have the seat next to them free.
A survey from Virgin Australia’s loyalty program last year found that 42 per cent of Virgin Australia flyers would consider parting with cash to have the seat next to them free on an international flight longer than three hours, while 35 per cent would consider it for domestic flights.
“Our priority is to give Virgin Australia guests even more value and choice when they choose to fly with us. Neighbour-Free Seating is a clever add-on for Economy travellers who want the certainty of extra space without the price tag.
“We actively listen to guest feedback, and this initiative is a direct response to what our customers have told us they want. It is a step forward in enhancing the onboard experience and a game changer for those who want more comfort and space during their flight.”
Virgin Australia already has an option for passengers to bid for an upgrade to business class.
Those who successfully bid in the new Neighbour-Free Seating initiative will be informed of their neighbourless flight at least two hours before departure.
The program is being rolled out on a select number of routes, including Melbourne-Sydney, Brisbane-Sydney, Melbourne-Perth, Sydney-Perth and Melbourne-Bali, ahead of a wider adoption of the option.
