Is it just me or has a portion of the world gone mad? Here we are in the middle of a pandemic and the absolutely weird stuff I am receiving in my inbox continues to amaze – and disappoint – me. Marketing and PR people what are you thinking?
Okay, so here’s one: “Qatar Airways Partners with IATA and ClimateCare to Launch Voluntary Carbon Offset Programme for Passengers”
That’s a great initiative but hey, who’s flying right now? Good luck getting people on your planes let alone voluntary offsetting your flight.
Here’s another: Find a new sparkling glow at Kamalaya
Kamalaya is, I’m told, a resort in Koh Samui in Thailand. “A beautiful, radiant glow from the inside out – isn’t that what we are all longing for? Our hectic lifestyle, coffee and sweets to keep us going and the stressful times we are all living in take their toll. The skin is often the first to show signs - we lose this beautiful shine we had before.”
That’s probably true. My skin is pretty ruddy right now. I’d love to get my radiant glow back by spending time at Kamalaya in Thailand. But hey, there’s a pandemic. How am I going to get to Koh Samui?
This is from one of our sort-of competitors in association with the big International Live Events Association based in the US: Achieving racial diversity in the events industry… hear from industry experts on what can and should be done to drive the industry towards a more equal level of representation.
Sorry what industry? Who’s holding meetings and events right now? Racially diverse or otherwise. Of course I’m all for racially diverse events but, like, what’s that big elephant doing standing over in the corner? Oh that’s COVID and he’s sort of stuffed things up at the moment. Should we mention that? No, let’s just pretend he’s not there and continue as if it’s business as usual.
IT’S NOT BUSINESS AS USUAL and you look kind of silly for not acknowledging that.
And one more before I start holding my finger on the DELETE button to get rid of more of these crazy “news items” that flood my inbox every day… Sabre strengthens partnership with Qantas to offer travel industry more rich content. SINGAPORE: 2 November 2020: Sabre Corporation (NASDAQ: SABR), a leading software and technology provider that powers the global travel industry, has today announced an enhancement to its agreement with Qantas that will offer agents access to richer information about the airline’s fares, products and services.
Is this for the travel agents who are on JobKeeper or the ones who have already lost their jobs? Perhaps it’s designed to give those sitting at home something to do.
What follows this opening statement of the press release is more about the program and yet absolutely no mention that travel agents have been decimated by COVID-19.
I could go on but I won’t.
I get that businesses and others have to continue to innovate, design new products, announce webinars and the like but seriously, burying your head in the sand and pretending that everything is normal is just not on.
