Melbourne has been named the 11th most sustainable city in the world according to the Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS-Index) which focuses on tourism and business events.
Melbourne was the highest ranked city in the Asia Pacific. Sydney was ranked a few places behind at 15 worldwide. The Index charts the sustainability of more than 70 countries globally, with the majority in Europe.
Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) partnered with City of Melbourne and Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) on the GDS-Index.
“Supporting Melbourne as a sustainable destination for international business events is a key goal for MCB,” said MCB Chief Executive Julia Swanson.
“Together, we’re taking proactive steps to ensure that business events in Melbourne result in positive social and environmental impacts that are sustainable and leave a lasting legacy.”
MCEC was the first convention centre in the world to receive a 6-Star Green Star sustainability rating and earlier this year indicated a goal of becoming carbon neutral by the end of the decade.
