Wellington’s focus on climate action, science draws in business events

As it becomes more important to increase the value of attending conferences while reducing negative climate impacts in conference delivery, Wellington’s focus on climate action, science, and innovation is attracting more business events.

Produced in partnership with Business Events Wellington

The capital boasts the largest research, science and innovation workforce in New Zealand. It’s home to Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington, one of the country’s oldest universities with the highest proportion of academics conducting high-quality research.

Whether it’s healthcare, the environment, or deep tech, scientists and the connected business community in Wellington are breaking new ground and using their discoveries to improve our planet and lives.

A recent NZ$450 million government investment to help establish three new collaborative research centres in Wellington will further enhance the city’s profile as a centre for research, science and innovation.

Its reputation as a “science city” is already driving associations across scientific fields to bring their conferences to Wellington.

For example, Wellington recently hosted the 36th International Symposium on Superconductivity, the first time this event has been held outside of Japan. Superconductivity is a key research area for Victoria University of Wellington. The capital is also set to host the Australian Society of Infectious Diseases (ASID) Annual Scientific Meeting in March.

Wellington’s environmental focus is also proving beneficial for organisers. The capital has the lowest emissions per capita of any Australasian city and was recently named one of the top 10 eco-cities in the world in Lonely Planet’s Sustainable Travel Handbook.

Events venues are working hard to reduce the impact of events on the environment and to make them more sustainable. It means organisers can find a wealth of forward-thinking ideas and experts to support their event.

Having environmental sustainability and resilience at the heart of Wellington’s newest conference and exhibition venue Tākina sat well with the Australian Psychological Society’s (APS) members’ symposium in 2023.

Being in the heart of a compact, walkable capital, Tākina’s – and Wellington’s – central location was also advantageous.

With its intellect, policy makers and focus on science, innovation, climate action and sustainability, Wellington is an ideal destination for your next conference.
