The five-star hotel in Russell Street, adjacent to the Paris end of Melbourne’s Collins Street, is Australia’s first Hyde hotel, a lifestyle brand developed by Ennismore who is in partnership with Accor.
Ennismore now has more than 160 properties worldwide, with a focus on lifestyle hotels, immersive resorts and iconic venues.
Initially built by Melbourne’s rich-list Lieberman family as an independent hotel with a design aesthetic described as bohemian, Hyde Melbourne Place rises only 12 storeys and has 192 keys including suites and a penthouse.
It is well positioned close to two free tram lines that run to Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre as well as offering two separate two levels of meeting and event space within the hotel. The largest of the four spaces caters for up to 300 attendees for stand up events and 166 pax in banquet configuration while other corporate meeting or training spaces with natural light can seat 50, 24 and 12, with the smallest room ideal as a boardroom or private dining space.
Distinctive along the CBD streetscape for its red brick appearance and rooftop portholes, Hyde Melbourne Place features a rooftop “Mid Air” dining space specialising in Mediterranean cuisine from Greece, Turkey and Spain, helmed by executive chef Nick Deligiannis
Likely to build a strong following among Melbourne’s foodie community is another restaurant, Marmelo, developed by restaurateurs Ross and Sunny Lusted, the names behind Woodcut, the acclaimed harbourside wood-grill restaurant at Crown Sydney. The Lusteds are offering Iberian coastal cuisine featuring fresh local Victorian produce.
Ross Lusted, renowned for his $330 steak dish at Woodcut, had expressed interest in a Melbourne venue for some time and briefly operated a temporary restaurant at Crown Towers Melbourne in the venue formerly occupied by Heston Blumenthal, but Crown Resorts was eventually sold by James Packer and the concept did not proceed to a permanent home in the Melbourne complex.
Hyde Melbourne Place also has a new general manager, Jodi Brown, formerly of Eos by SkyCity in Adelaide, who moved on to QT hotels in 2023 in New Zealand, before relocating to Melbourne for her latest role.
