The fund aims to support major tourism projects in Queensland – many of which are also likely to yield opportunities for the business events industry. Nine projects shared in the $25.5 million committed in the first round, including Palm Valley Gold Coast, which will see a hotel and event space built alongside a surf park, meanwhile, Experience Co got $4 million for a new 32m catamaran to take visitors out onto the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns.
With the full fund boasting a kitty of $80 million, tourism icons grants start at $1 million, with up to $5 million available per project. Those applying must match the government funding provided.
“We’re backing projects that showcase the very best of Queensland, attract new private investment and create opportunities for local businesses to grow,” said Queensland’s tourism minister, Andrew Powell.
“The success of the first round shows there’s strong confidence in Queensland’s tourism future and sends a clear message that Queensland is open for business.
“While the former government…planned to cut tourism funding by 95 per cent, we’re delivering record investment in the experiences and attractions that drive visitation, support jobs and strengthen our reputation as the home of the holiday.
“Tourism supports thousands of jobs across our state, and funds like this help ensure Queensland remains the destination of choice for Australian and international visitors.”
Expressions of interest for the second round of the Tourism Icons Investment Fund are open now, closing August 10. More information including EOI details can be found here.
