Bringing more than three decades of hotel experience to his new role, Mark Burns has joined Sofitel Sydney Wentworth as the property’s new general manager.
It’s a return to Accor for Burns, who previously led the Pullman Cairns International just after pandemic lockdowns eased.
Burns was also previously the general manager for the Fullerton Hotel Sydney, alongside spending more than 19 years with Starwood Hotels – now part of Marriott International – and more than six years with Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.
His most recent role prior to joining the Sofitel was as director of operations for Lanson Place Hotels and Residences, based in Hong Kong, a position which saw him interfacing with a variety of properties across Asia and one in Melbourne.
“Sofitel Sydney Wentworth holds a special place in the history of luxury accommodation in Australia. Mark’s extensive leadership experience, coupled with his passion for hospitality, makes him the ideal steward for this next chapter,” said vice president of operations for the Pacific for Sofitel, David Fraser.
“We are confident he will continue to build upon the hotel’s legacy, while setting new benchmarks in service and guest experience.”
Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has recently undergone a $77 million refurbishment which included all of the 436 guest rooms and yielded a new F&B precinct.
“The hotel’s rich heritage and its renewed vision present an extraordinary opportunity to elevate its artistry and re-establish it as one of the most inspiring hotels, not just in Sydney, but internationally,” said Burns.
His appointment comes after his predecessor Sam Panetta moved to the general manager role at Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour over winter.
