Major renovation of Sydney event space reaches halfway mark
The significant upgrades to large-scale event space the Cutaway at Barangaroo should be complete late this year.

Formally a blank canvas concrete shell of a venue, largely open air, beneath the eastern end of the reserve at Barangaroo on Sydney’s waterfront, the space is undergoing substantial renovations across three levels to improve its capabilities as an event space for both cultural and business events.

Works include creating new gallery and event spaces, enclosing ceiling voids with soundproof glass skylights and improving the forecourt, entrance and amenities, including adding a commercial kitchen.

“We’re making excellent progress, with half of the fitout now complete, including the internal mezzanine structure, feature cladding underway to the entrance, skylight install nearing completion and fitout works now commencing,” said project director Emma Thomy, from FDC Construction & Fitout, which is undertaking the renovations on behalf of the state government, which owns the Cutaway.

“The Cutaway is a once in a lifetime project, a masterclass of innovative and sustainable construction set to become a significant cultural landmark for our city,” said Thomy.

The revitalised venue is expected to be event operational in 2026.

“The transformation of the Cutaway represents the next chapter in Sydney’s cultural evolution,” said New South Wales’ arts minister, John Graham. “This ambitious project not only delivers world-class event spaces but also honours the deep cultural heritage of the site and its enduring connection to Country.

“The completion of this fitout will cement the Cutaway as a dynamic hub for creativity, community and cultural celebration.”

The new Metro station at Barangaroo has opened since the renovation of The Cutaway began, offering better public transport access to the precinct. Access via Wynard Station is also relatively easy.

Before it closed for its redevelopment works, the Cutaway could host groups of 3,500 people.
