With Fiji Airways beginning flights between Cairns and Nadi in April, the north Queensland destination will gain significantly faster access into North America.

The new route will cut up to three hours’ travel time between Cairns and North America by offering a one-stop connection to destinations like Los Angeles and Dallas Fort Worth.

“It’s going to be easier than ever for delegates travelling to and from North America,” said Cairns Convention Centre general manager, Janet Hamilton.

“We’re seeing increasing interest from global event organisers and the new flight route to and from Nadi – with onward connections to the US – couldn’t have come at a better time for us and future international visitors.”

Fiji Airways’ flights to and from Cairns will operate three times each week from April 10, adding 53,000 seats into Cairns, on a 170-seat Boeing 737 MAX 8, including eight Business Class seats.

“This announcement from Fiji Airways, Fiji’s national airline, is a game changer for our region,” said Cairns Airport CEO, Richard Barker.

“The new service is a significant step forward in expanding Cairns’ network and improving accessibility for both domestic and international travellers.”

“For international visitors heading to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef, travel will become much easier from April 2025.

“With Fiji Airways’ Oneworld membership and close alignment with American Airlines, many markets in North America are now within easy reach.”

Cairns has direct, continuous air connections with the likes of Singapore, Auckland, Bali and Tokyo. While Jetstar will maintain the Cairns-Tokyo connection, Virgin Australia announced last July that it will be ending its Cairns-Tokyo route due to it being “commercially unsustainable”.
