BESydney secures nearly $100 million in event business
Sydney’s strategic event bidding agency, BESydney, has locked in nearly $100 million of business events in the first half of the current financial year.

The event wins number over 30, with a strong representation of events in the science, engineering, technology and health sectors.

The almost $100 million is the expected direct expenditure from delegates attending events won by BESydney, which will take place between 2025 and 2030.

Wins include the Business Network International (BNI) Global Convention 2025, which will run over five days and has an estimated spend of $13.4 million from 2,500 delegates, the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control 2028 for 1,500 delegates, with a $6.5 million spend and the four-day World Congress of Audiology 2030 for 1,000 delegates, worth $5.9 million in delegate expenditure.

“Sydney is a city on the threshold of major change as the government plans come to fruition,” said BESydney’s CEO, Lyn Lewis-Smith, who is set to leave the agency in mid-2025.

“The Western Sydney International (WSI) Airport, Bradfield City and the surrounding Aerotropolis are a hub of city-changing development and the new infrastructure and investment accompanying them will have significant influence on our industry sectors, particularly aerospace and defence, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, freight and logistics, agribusiness, education and research.

“And the transformation continues around the city’s famous harbour, with the new Sydney Fish Markets a masterpiece in design, and the redevelopment around Darling Harbour and the International Convention Centre Sydney will be a game-changer for delegates to Sydney.

“We are seeing vibrant neighbourhoods come to life throughout the city through the work of the Office of the 24-Hour Economy Commissioner. We cannot wait to showcase Sydney shining ever more brightly on the global stage.”

BESydney now has a pipeline of 76 events locked in for Sydney out to 2030. Combined, these events are expected to draw 111,000 delegates who will spend an estimated $451 million. Thirty-one of these events will take place in 2025.

BESydney is also awaiting a promised funding boost, to the tune of $1.5 million, which will kick in during the second half of this financial year.
