Macao’s business diversification working well
Macao hosted some 700 MICE events in the first half of 2024, with the September to November peak projected to bring the estimated tally for 2024 to 1,500 events.

The restructured Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) reported that the average spending of MICE-related business visitors in the first half of 2024 was double that of tourists visiting Macao during the same period.

MICE activities in the first half of 2024 contributed a 30 per cent increase in non-gaming revenue compared to the same period last year. IPIM said it will continue encouraging business visitors to explore and spend in various communities across Macao.

It is also promoting talent development through local industry associations and companies partnering with international organisations in training.

Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) and MGM conducted a capacity-building program in September. The training for 78 participants was tailored for local MICE and tourism stakeholders and addressed the key themes of sustainability, marketing and technology.

Speaking on the MICE business outlook, PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid stressed “the critical importance of innovation, sustainability and excellence in the MICE sector, with a focus on Macao’s strategic position within the global and Asia-Pacific markets”.

Signalling product diversification among integrated resorts, the Poly MGM Museum will open in November. A partnership between Poly Culture Group and MGM, it is the first museum of international standing within an integrated resort in Greater China.

Located on the second floor of MGM Macau, the 2,000m2 museum presents art and artifacts from both Eastern and Western countries and will work to preserve intangible cultural heritage.

Through interactive displays and directional audio systems, visitors will enjoy a multi-sensory immersive experience at diverse exhibitions.

Pansy Ho, chairperson and executive director of MGM China Holdings, said Poly Culture and MGM will “inject new life into the storied legacy of Chinese culture using cutting-edge technology”.

“We employ the universal language of art to broadcast the splendour of our culture and to convey good Chinese narratives on the international stage. Featuring world-class artistic expression, the Poly MGM Museum serves as a conduit linking the heartbeat of global cultures via Macao,” she said.
