The meeting will be held at the University of Auckland in September 2027 and is expected to draw 350 delegates, generating NZ$950,000 for the economy.
This will the first time the conference has been held in New Zealand and Australasia.
The conference explores computing in clinical cardiology and cardiovascular physiology and how it can help the world better understand, diagnose and treat heart disease.
Led by Associate Professor Jichao Zhao from the Auckland Bioengineering Institute at the University of Auckland, the bid had support from both Auckland Convention Bureau and Tourism New Zealand through its business events division.
“Since the 1980s the Auckland Bioengineering Institute has been involved in studying the electrical and mechanical functions of the heart,” said Zhao.
“We have a very big international reputation. That played a large part in winning the bid.”
“Plus, the opportunities to experience New Zealand and its scenery and nature – a lot of people do want to come here.”
Both Zhao and Auckland Convention Bureau head Ken Pereira noted the opportunities the conference presented for the field and for the city.
“This conference plays an important role in nurturing young researchers, post doctorate students and Masters students,” said Zhao.
“They’ll be learning through attending plenary talks and networking functions but will also have the opportunity to present at poster sessions and get guidance from senior researchers.”
Pereira said: “Auckland offers world-class innovation and capability in the bioengineering sector, so to bring delegates to our city is a valuable opportunity for discussion, advancing research opportunities and to make new connections.”
