Wellington to host international building physics conference
Wellington will host the International Building Physics Conference in 2027, when it comes to the Southern Hemisphere for the first time.

Delegates from over 40 countries are expected to attend the meeting in New Zealand’s capital in August 2027.

The conference is held every three years and has just wrapped up in Toronto, Canada. Running since 2000, the event has been held in Europe, the USA, Japan and twice – including this year – in Canada.

“The conference will bring hundreds of delegates to New Zealand to connect and advance new ideas to solve pressing issues in building – ultimately helping to develop more affordable, sustainable, resilient and healthy housing around the world,” said Claire Falck, CEO of the Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ), which will host the event when it comes to New Zealand.

The conference will be held at Wellington’s new convention centre, Tākina, which opened last June. The event also has support from Tourism New Zealand and Business Events Wellington.

“It is fitting that this conference will take place at the brand-new Tākina Wellington Convention & Exhibition Centre,” said Business Events Wellington manager Irette Ferreira.

“It has already won architecture and property awards for its design and sustainability credentials, making it an ideal venue for a conference focused on building best practice.”

General manager of research at BRANZ, Dr Chris Litten, said delegates would visit the association’s research and testing facilities during the conference, alongside taking in presentations and interactive sessions at the convention centre.

“New Zealand has some unique characteristics, such as our climate and earthquake-prone geography, and many of these have influenced our building methods and materials,” said Litten

“We have a lot of building science knowledge to share with the world.”
