Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre shifts to renewable energy
Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) has become the first business events venue in Malaysia to join a pioneering renewable energy program.

Signing up to the Green Electricity Tariff (GET), a collaboration between the Malaysian Government and Malaysia’s largest electricity provider, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), KLCC has been powered by renewable energy since last month, drawn from large scale solar, hydropower and other renewable sources.

The centre is the first business events venue to join the scheme.

The new energy arrangement will provide a major boost the KLCC’s ambitions to operate with net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and will also be used to pursue bids for sustainably focussed events.

“In line with Malaysia’s sustainability agenda and the guiding principles of our industry and owners, our objective was to shift at least 25 per cent of our energy to renewable sources by 2030, but the subscription to GET has enabled us to do this much more quickly,” said KLCC’s general manager John Burke.

“This is a significant milestone for us, reflecting our continuous commitment to ESG practices and our desire to be one of the sustainability leaders in the business events industry.

“By subscribing to GET we have ensured that our clients’ events will be powered by green energy, and we are now working to build on this achievement by hitting our next target, which is to reduce overall power consumption by 25 per cent before 2030.”

Burke believes the renewably powered centre will be a good draw for event organisers.

“Our subscription to the Green Electricity Tariff enables meeting and events planners to confidently organise events at the centre, knowing that the impact of those events on the environment will be dramatically reduced.

“This achievement is another strong step forward in aligning our ability to support our clients’ own ESG goals for delivering sustainable events, adding to the centre’s attractiveness as the preferred venue for both international and domestic events.”

KLCC has had a major sustainability focus for some time, with a dedicated Sustainable Development Goals taskforce within the venue helping to guiding the journey. The centre has implemented waste reduction, recycling and composting initiatives and developed sustainable sourcing practices and added a hydroponic farm on its roof.

The centre is also working with other visitor economy businesses within its immediate precinct to make the area more sustainable.
