A welcome event last night at Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand was attended by 680 guests, including New Zealand’s tourism minister Peeni Henare and Wellington’s mayor Tory Whanau – both of whom addressed the crowd – while Australia’s high commissioner to New Zealand, Harinder Sidhu, was also invited.
“Over the next two days we are showcasing Wellington’s stunning new convention and exhibition centre and making the most of its superb location on the waterfront opposite sister venue, Te Papa,” said BEIA’s chief executive Lisa Hopkins, ahead of the MEETINGS trade floor opening this morning.
“New Zealand has it all. New-generation infrastructure including brand new convention centres, excellent international connections, and superb support services including accommodation, hospitality, and visitor attractions make it a highly desirable meeting place.”
The hosting convention centre, Tākina, has been open for just three weeks, celebrating its official debut on May 31.
“It was a thrill to see Tākina abuzz with industry delegates this morning,” said Jake Downing, director of Tākina Events, which operates the new convention and exhibition centre in the heart of Wellington.
“This event is renowned for its impact on the industry, and we are committed to creating an exceptional environment that fosters collaboration, inspiration, and growth.
“I am immensely proud of the work our team has done to position Tākina Events as leaders in conferences and events in Aotearoa.”
With a record participation this year, including 100 buyers from Australia and 10 from Asia and North America, MEETINGS is expected to be carbon neutral for the first time in 2023. BEIA is working with New Zealand environmental consultancy and certification organisation Toitū to achieve carbon neutral status for the event.
