Tākina: The convention centre that connects culture, innovation and sustainability

Wellington’s Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre is more than a venue, it’s a place where ideas are brought forth and connections are made.

Produced in partnership with Business Events Wellington

The name Tākina means to invoke, to connect and bring forth. It reflects the spirit of Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington), a city shaped by its winds and known for its energy, creativity and openness. That same spirit flows through Tākina’s design and purpose.

These winds are more than weather, they symbolise the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next, carrying truths and ideas across great distances. That same spirit flows through Tākina’s design and purpose.

The award-winning design was inspired by Wellington’s dramatic weather, maritime setting and Māori mythology. Its form reflects Te Upoko o Te Ika; the head of the great fish of Māui, connecting the building to the land and stories of Aotearoa.

A leader in sustainability, Tākina is designed, built and operated in a way that minimises negative impacts on the environment and the people visiting and working in the building.

It is the first convention centre in New Zealand to achieve 5-Star Green Star Design rating by the New Zealand Green Building Council, representing excellence in environmental performance, energy efficiency and green building standards. Purpose built to support international events, Tākina has over 10,000m2 of flexible meeting space and is ideal for hosting conferences from 300 to 1,600 delegates.

For Australian event organisers, Tākina offers a unique mix of cultural depth, sustainability and modern capability. Delegates will enjoy being in the capital, just minutes from the airport and close to government and key decision makers, with opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations.

Wellington’s compact city centre is easy to explore on foot, with excellent cafés and restaurants just minutes from the venue.

Directly across the street is Te Papa, Aotearoa New Zealand’s national museum, the #1 attraction in New Zealand, according to the 2025 Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards. Delegates can explore its rich history, art, and culture independently or on a guided tour, adding an inspiring dimension to their experience.
