The school will be run by Visitor Experience Training (VXT).
Tasmania’s premier and tourism minister, Jeremy Rockliff, launched the new school in Hobart yesterday. The state government is also supporting the school financially.
“The tourism and hospitality sector is a jobs powerhouse, employing one in eight Tasmanians,” said Rockliff.
“We know there is already strong demand for this workforce across our state and that’s why we are investing in practical, job-ready training for the next generation of tourism and hospitality workers.”
“We have committed $1.3 million through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future to support VXT to deliver short courses to upskill Tasmanians in areas such as housekeeping, food and beverage service, front-of-house training and bar operators,” he said.
Just 12 students will be accepted into the six-week course, with expressions of interest open until September 4.
At the end of the program, participants will be offered an interview at a hotel in Hobart.
VXT was started in 2021 by the Tasmanian Hospitality Association and the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania with a $1 million grant from the state government.
The organisation also runs a variety of other courses to train for specific skills in the hospitality sector from food safety to leadership and conflict resolution with customers.
The new hotel school is a pilot program with the intention of replicating the model in partnership with industry in other parts of the state in the future.
