Melbourne has won the hosting rights for the 30th annual congress of the Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology (APLAR) in 2028.

The meeting will bring together more than 2,000 delegates from 32 rheumatology associations across Asia Pacific and is expected to yield a $14 million economic impact for Melbourne.

Between the 32 APAC rheumatology associations, membership sits at more than 25,000 professionals working in the field across 30 countries.

The Melbourne congress will platform research, thought leadership and discussion on musculoskeletal and rheumatic diseases for rheumatologists alongside other health professionals and researchers in the field.

“This important event will bring together experts from across the Asia Pacific to share knowledge, highlight Australian research, and build collaborations that will shape the future of rheumatology care and research,” said Australian Rheumatology Association president Sam Whittle.

The meeting will also put Melbourne’s research and facilities in rheumatology in the spotlight.

“We’re proud to bring another important global health congress to Melbourne, which will attract thousands of international visitors, boost our economy and support local jobs,” said Victoria’s tourism, sport and major events minister, Steve Dimopoulos.

“Events like these help to advance healthcare and innovation here in Victoria and cement Melbourne as the nation’s home of medical research.”

The event will be held at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
