The InterContinental will take over what was the Hilton Brisbane, in the Wintergarden retail development owned by ISPT.
Hilton exited the property at the end of March and the InterContinental Brisbane will open in early June.
The hotel is located on Elizabeth St while also being connected to Queen’s St Mall via Wintergarden.
Once part of the InterContinental brand, the hotel will undergo a two-year renovation, emerging with 321 rooms, four restaurants and bars and “expansive” offerings for events.
“We knew it would take a special property to bring our iconic InterContinental brand to life in Brisbane and are incredibly proud to partner with ISPT in support of the rejuvenation of this incredible asset and we look forward to creating an indelible beacon of hospitality for Brisbane,” said IHG Hotels and Resorts’ director of development for Australasia and the Pacific, Cameron Burke.
“The Brisbane hotel market and [the] Southeast Queensland region, is entering a golden era fuelled by transformative infrastructure projects, a booming tourism sector and the countdown to the 2032 Olympics.
“With record investment and a surge in both corporate and leisure demand, the region is fast becoming Australia’s most dynamic hospitality hotspot.”
Aside from its own event spaces, the InterContinental Brisbane will be located a walkable distance from the growing Queen’s Wharf development and its Event Centre as well as Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre which can be accessed via the new Neville Bonner pedestrian bridge, built in tandem with Queen’s Wharf.
“We are excited to partner with IHG to bring the globally renowned InterContinental brand to Brisbane,” said Tom Waters, head of development for office, industrial, retail and mixed use at ISPT.
“We sought a brand that would epitomise luxury, honour the legacy of the building and become a cornerstone of the vibrant precinct we’re developing.
“Leveraging ISPT’s expertise in placemaking and curating urban experiences, this precinct is set to transform Brisbane’s CBD. It will seamlessly integrate the Regent Theatre, Wintergarden retail and dining offering, alongside a world-class InterContinental hotel.
“Together, we share a vision to see the hotel completely revitalised and we’re thrilled to be embarking on this transformative project with IHG.”
This is the second major Australian opening announced for InterContinental in as many months, with a new-build InterContinental announced for the Barossa Valley wine region in South Australia last month.
