Howard Smith Wharves takes over major Brisbane visitor experience
The event and dining precinct has taken over the Story Bridge Adventure Climb from its founder.

Brisbane tourism figure, John Sharpe – founder of Riverlife Brisbane, amongst other visitor experiences – has handed over the reins of the bridge climb product to Howard Smith Wharves.

Howard Smith Wharves opened in 2018, breathing new life into a former river port for a shipping company. The precinct offers dedicated event venues for up to 360 seated and can host groups of up to 424 seated in the Felons Barrel Hall.

“We’re so excited about this next chapter,” said Howard Smith Wharves CEO, Luke Fraser.

“At Howard Smith Wharves our guests are used to being nestled on a bean bag or a riverside chair, gazing up at the Story Bridge, but what an experience if you combined both and also took in the scenes of the city and river from above.

“The Story Bridge is one of the most iconic structures in Brisbane and one of its pylons literally lands in the centre of Howard Smith Wharves.  Each day when I come to work, I’m reminded of the remarkable history on our doorstep and genuinely inspired by the convergence of natural and man-made beauty.

“With the Story Bridge Adventure Climb being only one of three bridge climbs in the world, it really captures what we love most about our city – the river, our skyline, our beautiful green spaces and sharing experiences with friends and family. Particularly as we approach 2032, we’re proud to offer a local experience in the heart of our global city,” he said.

“We are excited to add this climb to Howard Smith Wharves family and thank Sharpey for his dedication to this venture for the last 18 years. With our team, who are deeply passionate about showcasing Brisbane at its best, we are proud to keep this business locally owned and support new employment opportunities.”

Crystalbrook Collection also operates the 166-room Crystalbrook Vincent hotel onsite at Howard Smith Wharves.
