Hotel news: Renovations and a new opening
There’s a new opening Perth while properties in Auckland and Sydney are benefitting from renovations.

A Courtyard by Marriott opening in Perth

The Courtyard by Marriott brand has entered the West Australian market, with the opening of Courtyard by Marriott Perth, Murdoch.

The 150-room property is located in close proximity to Murdoch University, around 20 minutes from Perth’s CBD and just over 20 minutes from Perth’s airport.

“A key focus of our growth strategy is to open hotels in significant urban growth corridors and the Murdoch Health and Knowledge precinct being Western Australia’s newest healthcare and commercial district is an ideal fit allowing the hotel to appeal to a broad range of leisure and business travellers,” said Marriott International’s area vice president for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, Sean Hunt.

The property has one meeting room, the Dampiera Library, which can accommodate up to 18 people in theatre, 14 in a U shape or 35 for cocktails.

The hotel also has a restaurant and café onsite called Substance Restaurant & Bar.

“Each facility in the hotel is aimed at creating an environment where great things can happen, enabling our guests to focus on productivity, or simply relax,” said the hotel’s general manager James Illing.

The refurbished ballroom at Grand Millennium Auckland

Part of a $30 million refurbishment of the whole hotel, Grand Millennium Auckland has unveiled its updated ballroom, which includes new LED on the wall – and in the roof.

The ballroom now has a 11.5m LED wall, plus a light sculpture hanging from the ceiling which includes more than a million hand-assembled LED lights.

“The Sky Garden stands as a testament to artistry, innovation, and perseverance,” said James Russ Studio who created the sculpture for the room.

“As light dances and bounces off every surface – a sensation akin to ‘floating in a glass of champagne’ – it captivates those below.”

New carpet in the ballroom is inspired by a stream which flows beneath the city and out into Auckland’s harbour.

The 830m2 ballroom is one of the largest in Auckland and can host audiences of 800 in theatre and banquets of 550.

“We’re ecstatic to showcase what is arguably one of Auckland’s best ballrooms for captivating conferencing, weddings, and gala events,” said Grand Millennium Auckland’s general manager, James Billing.

“The new design is even better than we had envisaged thanks to our refurbishment partners, James Russ Studio and Material Creative who have brought to life our vision, elevating the elegance and grandeur that has always been here.”

The TFE property will close down on April 16 for a full refurbishment. The target for completion is December 2024, before Christmas and New Year.

Sustainable design firm Bates Smart will be undertaking the project which will include all guest rooms and bathrooms, corridors, the lobby and four meeting spaces.

“This major scale project represents a huge repositioning of the asset, and ultimately supports our contemporary vision for the Adina brand,” said TFE Hotels’ group chief operating officer, Chris Sedgwick.

“Elevating the Adina brand and hotel experience across our network is our absolute goal – city by city and hotel by hotel.

“Adina Town Hall – which launched in 1998 enjoys an enviable location sought out by both business travellers and leisure guests wanting to explore the city – is the latest in the TFE Hotels portfolio to undergo an extensive update as part this rolling refurbishment program and indeed, Sydney is a massive focus for us in 2024 with the Adina in Darling Harbour also in our sights.

“It’s an exciting time for TFE Hotels and our homegrown Adina Hotels brand.”
