Christchurch to have New Zealand’s first Sheraton hotel
In a win for business events, Sheraton Christchurch will be located just one building over from the city’s convention centre, Te Pae.

The 14-storey, 240-room hotel is expected to open in mid-2027, after a $150-million-plus refurbishment of what was first launched as Noah’s Hotel in the 1970s and later became a Rydges property.

“Partnering with a world-class hospitality brand like Sheraton validates both our vision for this project and Christchurch’s emergence as a destination for leisure and corporate travel,” said Ben Bridge, director at Mainland Capital, one of the leaders of the consortium of investors that owns the hotel.

“Sheraton Christchurch will bring renewed vibrancy to the city’s riverside precinct and deliver exceptional hospitality experiences for both guests and the public.”

Alongside guest rooms, the river-facing hotel will feature event spaces, a rooftop bar and a restaurant.

The hotel marks Marriott International’s entrance into the Christchurch hotel landscape as well as being the first Sheraton property in New Zealand.

Marriott International’s vice president of hotel development for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, Richard Crawford, said Sheraton was Marriott’s “most established brand” in the region.

“With its central location and world-class facilities, the hotel will play a key role in Christchurch’s CBD revitalisation,” said Crawford.

“As the South Island’s primary tourism gateway and the departure point to Antarctica, the city is ready for more globally recognised accommodation and Sheraton Christchurch will deliver that.”

Te Pae Christchurch’s general manager, Ross Steele, applauded the forthcoming arrival of the global hotel brand so close to the convention centre.

“To have a beautifully considered new international standard five-star Sheraton hotel right next door to Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre will be a game changer for our city’s future convention proposition,” said Steele.

“Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre has led the way for New Zealand’s re-entry into the international convention market [and] this five-star Sheraton hotel, opening in 2027, will take us to the next level.”
