The conference explores miniaturised systems for chemistry and life sciences – micro total analysis systems. In doing so, it brings together a variety of disciplines, including chemistry, life sciences and biology and the meeting is expected to attract engineers and scientists working in academia, government and corporate research.
The field impacts the environment, agriculture, energy, food and health.
The Adelaide meeting will mark the first time the conference has been hosted in the Southern Hemisphere.
With subvention support from Tourism Australia’s Business Events Bid Fund, the event is expected to attract 1,100 delegates, 950 of which are anticipated to be from outside Australia.
Adelaide was announced as the next destination for the annual conference at its 2024 iteration, held in Montreal, Canada last week.
“One of the strengths of Adelaide is its commitment to sustainability and the initiatives and investment that has been made in the city and the ACC,” said Professor Michael Breadmore, who is one of three conference chairs for the Australian event.
“Combined with the perfect venue layout and location for our conference and the wonderful food and produce, we felt that Adelaide could truly deliver the Australian experience we wanted to offer to our delegates.”
Another of the co-chairs, Professor Rosanne Guijt called the relationships and links with the Indigenous communities of Adelaide “another defining factor” along with state plans to establish a First Nations Voice to Parliament.
“We want MicroTAS 2025 to respect and include all Australian cultures, including that of our first peoples, who are the world’s first scientists and engineers. Adelaide – and South Australia – felt like the right place to be able to do that.”
Meanwhile the third co-chair, Professor Craig Priest, confirmed that support from Business Events Adelaide was critical to bringing the event to Adelaide.
“We felt that Business Events Adelaide really understood our vision and shared our enthusiasm to deliver a unique and fulfilling MicroTAS conference. We had no fear, knowing that we would have ‘Team Adelaide’ beside us every step of the way.”
Business Events Adelaide CEO Damien Kitto said the choice of Adelaide for the MicroTAS conference showed that the city was getting a reputation for hosting cross-disciplinary conferences.
