Following significant investment in The Star Entertainment Group, there have been several more appointments across the group and its properties.

John Koster has been appointed CEO of The Star Sydney, while David Whimpey is the new chief operating officer and the interim CEO at The Star Brisbane.

At a companywide level, Charlie Diao has been appointed as The Star’s chief financial officer while Tom Boyd is the new interim chief legal officer.

Both Koster and Diao have moved over from properties run by Bally’s Corporation in the USA.

Bally’s contributed the largest portion of the recent investment in The Star, tipping in $200 million, and now owns 38 per cent of The Star’s shares.

Whimpey joins The Star Brisbane from Surf Life Saving Queensland, where he was CEO for almost seven years. He was also previously CEO of Brisbane Racing Club and held senior positions with Coles and Tabcorp.

Meanwhile Boyd is an internal promotion, having joined The Star a year and a half ago from Tabcorp.

“Charlie brings deep financial expertise and global experience at a pivotal time for The Star,” said The Star’s CEO and managing director, Bruce Mathieson Jnr.

“His leadership will be instrumental as we continue to stabilise the business, strengthen our governance settings and position the company for long-term performance.

“We are also pleased to welcome John, David and Tom to their respective roles. Together, these appointments enhance the stability and capability of our senior leadership team and support the ongoing transformation of The Star.”

Mathieson Jnr is also a relatively recent appointment for The Star, becoming CEO in mid-December.

Mathieson’s family controls Investment Holdings, which made a $100 million investment in The Star at the same time as Bally’s $200 million contribution.

Investment Holdings is The Star’s second largest investor after Bally’s, holding a 23 per cent stake in the company.

Mathieson Jnr has more than 30 years of experience in hotels, hospitality and gaming.
