ABEA launches safety guide for Australia’s business events industry

The new guide from the Australian Business Events Association (ABEA) covers health and safety best practice, risk management, safety regulations and emergency management across the full event lifecycle from pre-planning to post-event review.

Produced by the association’s risk and safety council, with broader industry consultation across a variety of roles and stakeholders, the ABEA BE:SAFE guide covers a range of business event types.

The interactive, online guide is freely available and built around six areas: getting started, which covers core safety principles and contextualises the guide, people and responsibilities, planning and management, event delivery, the event environment and emergency planning and response.

An A to Z guide and a resource library that has links to state-specific safety legislation are also included in the guide.

“Given the number of people, suppliers and moving parts involved in delivering an event, safety is a responsibility shared across every part of our industry,” said ABEA CEO Melissa Brown.

“That’s why developing an evolving source of truth that the industry can turn to for practical guidance was so important.”

There will be a free webinar – both for members and non-members of ABEA – exploring the guide on November 17 and the guide will presented during a session at ABEA’s conference in December by Bea Tomlin, founder of Beaspoke Safety and one of the members of ABEA’s risk and safety council.

“Events are complex environments and the responsibility for safety doesn’t sit with one person or begin when an event opens. It needs to be considered throughout the entire lifecycle,” said Tomlin.

“We wanted ABEA BE:SAFE to cut through some of that complexity and give organisers, venues, suppliers and exhibitors a practical place to start, whatever their role or the stage of the event.”
