Sydney will host the 64th Annual Australia-Japan Joint Business Conference next year.

The event is expected to attract 700 delegates and is projected to drive $1.5 million into the New South Wales economy.

The event, which alternates between Australia and Japan each year, hasn’t been held in Sydney since before the pandemic.

“Securing this conference for Sydney is a major vote of confidence in New South Wales,” said the state’s industry and trade minister, Anoulack Chanthivong.

“Japan is one of our most important partners, and bringing senior business leaders from both countries together in Sydney will help unlock new investment, create jobs and open new export opportunities for NSW businesses.

“With Western Sydney Airport and Bradfield taking shape, there has never been a better time to showcase the enormous opportunities available across New South Wales and [to] strengthen our economic partnership with Japan.”

Evidencing the importance of the relationship between NSW and Japan, last year, exports from NSW to the Asian nation were valued at $17.3 billion.

“We are delighted Sydney will host our 64th Annual Australia-Japan Joint Business Conference, in the year marking the 70th Anniversary of the signing of the Australia-Japan Agreement on Commerce,” said Peter Grey AM, president of the Australia-Japan Business Co-operation Committee, one of the event’s organisers.

“It is highly appropriate that we gather in Sydney to celebrate that milestone, given the strength of the Japanese business community in New South Wales and the extent of the business partnerships that exist between New South Wales and Japan.

“Our 2027 conference will provide an important platform to build new commercial connections, advance collaboration in emerging industries and showcase the significant opportunities NSW, and Australia more broadly, offers Japanese investors and businesses.”

Chair of the event’s other organiser, the Japan-Australia Business Co-operation Committee, Michiaki Hirose, shared Grey’s enthusiasm for the Sydney summit.

“Japan and Australia share deep economic ties founded on trust, mutual benefit and a long history of cooperation,” said Hirose.

“We are thrilled to return to Sydney for the 64th Joint Business Conference, our first gathering in the city in nine years. I look forward to seeing Sydney filled with Japanese participants and activated people-to-people exchanges.”
