The event is expected to draw more than 750 delegates from Australia and around the world and have a $3 million impact on Victoria’s economy.
The event will bring together eye disease experts alongside those working in vision correction and rehabilitation, pharmaceutical interventions and assistive technology for those with low vision. The meeting will also be attended by policy makers and educators.
Melbourne Convention Bureau helmed the successful event bid in collaboration with the Centre for Eye Research Australia and the University of Melbourne. The bid also received “invaluable support” from the president of the 2027 conference, Professor Lauren Ayton, who is a clinician and scientist at the University of Melbourne in the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences.
“ISLRR is delighted to partner with Professor Ayton and her team at the University of Melbourne for Vision 2027,” said ISLRR president Ben Thompson.
“The Vision conference series brings together low vision stakeholders from around the world with the goal of enhancing quality of life for those experiencing vision loss. Vision 2027 will be a catalyst for new collaborations and will advance low vision research.”
Ayton confirmed the conference would see collaboration between low vision experts and those living with low vision.
“We are thrilled to be welcoming the best and brightest minds working on low vision rehabilitation and research to Melbourne in 2027, where they will work alongside people living with low vision and blindness to think about innovations and improvements in the vision sector,” she said.
Vision 2027 joins a healthy lineup of international medical conferences for Melbourne, with the city also set to hold the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2025 this November, the International Diabetes Federations Western Pacific Regional Congress 2026 and the Global Hepatitis Summit 2027.
“Melbourne’s ability to foster collaboration and innovation is a testament to our strong community of knowledge leaders and the fantastic infrastructure provided by our city to host global gatherings of experts in healthcare,” said Melbourne Convention Bureau CEO, Julia Swanson.
“Events like Vision 2027 drive progress and build a better future.”
The conference will be held in September 2027 with Think Business Events as its PCO.
