Master certification is currently EarthCheck’s highest level of certification and BCEC is just the third convention centre to reach the standard.
EarthCheck’s long-running certification program is science-based and encompasses both environmental and social sustainability, considering energy, water and chemical use, waste and carbon emissions alongside the impact of a business on its employees and the community.
Master certification acknowledges 15 years of independently verified advances in the sustainability efforts of Brisbane’s convention centre.
As part of its latest recertification and elevation to master status, BCEC’s circular economy culture, staff awareness and training and cultural inclusion were acknowledged as best practice.
“Achieving EarthCheck Master Certification is not simply about reaching a milestone,” said EarthCheck’s CEO and founder, Stewart Moore.
“It represents 15 years of leadership, discipline and continuous improvement. BCEC has demonstrated that sustainability is embedded into how the organisation operates, how its people make decisions and how it continues to invest in better outcomes for the future.”
As part of its sustainability endeavours, the centre continues to work on energy efficiency, reducing food waste, resource recovery, community partnerships and staff engagement.
“Strong sustainability outcomes are built through embedding environmental and social responsibility into systems and everyday decision-making,” said BCEC’s sustainability and community engagement coordinator Jodie Summers.
“This recognition reflects a sustained centre-wide effort to embed environmental and social responsibility into every aspect of our operations. The strongest outcomes are achieved when it’s woven into everyday decision-making rather than treated as an additional consideration.”
BCEC’s general manager, Kym Guesdon, said the venue’s team were “extremely proud” to achieve EarthCheck’s Master certification.
“It recognises the dedication our teams have demonstrated through years of independent assessment and continual improvement.
“Our ability to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact while supporting a growing events business highlights the commitment, innovation and leadership of Team BCEC.
“Environmental and social outcomes are increasingly important considerations for event organisers and this recognition reinforces our ability to support clients in delivering events that meet both business and sustainability goals.”
Adelaide Convention Centre and Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre are the two other convention centres currently Master certified by EarthCheck, with both achieving the feat in October last year.
EarthCheck’s certification program is wildly used by convention centres, hotels and tourism businesses both in Australia and around the world.
