Sustainability certification gains ground in Singapore’s MICE industry
MICE stakeholders in Singapore are getting to grips with going green. They are either getting global sustainability accreditation or the Singapore national standard, the MICE Sustainability Certification (MSC).

The MSC was developed by the Singapore Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (SACEOS) with support from the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and in consultation with Singapore-based members and industry players.

“Since the introduction of the MICE Sustainability Roadmap in 2022, we have made significant strides in advancing a more sustainable industry,” said Edward Koh, STB’s executive director of conventions, meetings and incentive travel.

“We strongly encourage MICE stakeholders to pursue their sustainability certification to a national or international standard that aligns with their level of readiness.”

Launched this January, the MSC aims to raise sustainability standards by setting out sustainable practices for event organisers, stand builders, venues, caterers, transport operators, freight forwarders and event tech and AV providers.

“Increasingly, clients seek strategic and practical advice on the organisation of sustainable events,” said Dylan Sharma, co-founder and director of TRICOM Events, the first company to attain the MSC.

“It is important that our industry has recognised means of providing assurance of our capabilities in organising sustainable events.”

Businesses with sizeable international clientele may prefer to go for Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) certification in business events or industry categories such as hotels and tour operators.

Pan Pacific Hotels Group’s eight properties in Singapore have received GSTC certification, underscoring the group’s dedication to environmental stewardship and responsible business practices, it said.

Fairmont Singapore and Swissôtel The Stamford’s GSTC certification under hotels includes Raffles City Convention Centre. Among various measures, the hotels started an industry-first urban aquaponics farm that caters to the rising demand for fresh produce.

Meanwhile, Pullman Singapore Orchard is the first and only Singapore hotel to receive Green Globe certification which covers sustainable management, both social and economic, cultural heritage and environmental stewardship.
