Hong Kong’s business events sector gathering momentum after COVID-era shutdown
Medical and technology events are surging in Hong Kong, after the traditional business events powerhouse destination was one of the last countries in Asia to fully reopen following years of COVID-era travel restrictions.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) reports that medical events comprise the “lion’s share” of conventions held in Hong Kong in a strong 2023, including the 44th Asia Pacific Dental Congress 2023 held last month, with more than 5,000 delegates, and the 16th Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society Scientific Session, in conjunction with CardioRhythm, set for delivery in September 2023.

“The growing demand is providing a welcome stimulus for Hong Kong’s economy,” said HKTB’s general manager of MICE and cruise, Kenneth Wong.

“Thanks to Hong Kong’s leading status across various industries and tremendous opportunities brought by the Greater Bay Area (GBA), we are delighted that Hong Kong further strengthens its status as the world’s meeting place and remains a top choice among convention organisers.”

Major tech wins include the EDGE Global AI & Web3 Investment Summit 2023, a new event taking place in Hong Kong in September, with 10,000 attendees expected.

“Hong Kong is simply a world-class stage for Web3 and artificial intelligence events and beyond,” said the event’s organiser, Ander Tsui, who is also co-chair of the Hong Kong Blockchain Association and founder of VertexLabs.

“Not only does it draw global venture capitals, investment institutions, and enthusiasts from across the globe, but it also serves as the perfect gateway to the dynamic GBA. We look forward to seeing our high-octane event debut in Hong Kong.”

Hong Kong will also host the Insurtech Insights Asia 2023 Conference in December, for an anticipated 3,000 delegates.

“We are thrilled to be building the largest pan-Asia insurance and insurtech conference in Hong Kong to gather insurance executives, entrepreneurs, and investors by providing knowledge, inspiration and network,” said the CEO of Insurtech Insights, Kristoffer Lundberg, and Insurtech Insights president for Asia, Hung W. Wong.

“We are extremely grateful for the tremendous support from the Hong Kong governmental organisations.”

This year, the city has already hosted FOMO Asia Genesis Conference and WOW Summit 2023 with the latter marking the entry of the WOW event format into the Asia Pacific market. These events both deal with web3, put simply a reimagining of how the internet might be transformed in the era of blockchain and decentralisation.

After many regional conferences relocated from Hong Kong to other parts of Asia in 2022, due to the city’s restrictive entry policies, the return of major conference business is significant.
