AirAsia will connect Darwin and Kuala Lumper from mid-2025.

The new route provides the first low-cost connection between Darwin and Asia in almost a decade.

Flights will begin on June 27, with four return services a week operating between the two destinations on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Flight time is just a touch above five hours.

The services will create nearly 100,000 seats between Darwin and Kuala Lumpur each year.

The services open up new business events opportunities for Darwin, elevating its attractiveness as a conference destination by providing easier access for Asian delegates and providing new access for incentive groups out of Malaysia and wider Asia.

“With our seamless Fly-Thru services via Kuala Lumpur, travellers from across Asia, including Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, China, Cambodia and South Korea can now easily access Darwin and experience the wonders of Australia’s Top End,” said CEO of AirAsia Malaysia, Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra.

“We are excited to introduce Darwin as our newest Australian destination, providing an affordable gateway to Asia for Territorians while opening up new tourism opportunities for Malaysians and our wider network.

“Darwin is a hidden gem that offers adventure, stunning natural landscapes, and rich Indigenous culture – making it a perfect addition to our expanding portfolio of Australian destinations.”

Rob Porter, executive general manager of airports for Airport Development Group, which owns and operates Darwin Airport, called the new route “a much-needed low-cost connection”.

“This route directly responds to demand from our community, who have long called for more affordable travel options to key destinations like Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and India,” he said.

“Beyond offering greater choice for Territorians, this new link will also strengthen inbound tourism, supporting local businesses and cementing Darwin’s position as a key international gateway. We look forward to working closely with AirAsia to grow this service and explore future opportunities for expansion.”

AirAsia was recently named the best low-cost airline in the world by AirlineRatings.com.

The new route received support from the Territory Aviation Attraction Scheme.

Darwin Airport also has direct international flights to Singapore and Denpasar in Bali and Dili in Timor-Leste.
