Australian hotel selected amongst world’s best
A Brisbane hotel has been ranked at number 12 on the inaugural list of the World’s 50 Best Hotels.

The Calile Hotel in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley is the only Australian hotel to make the top 50, as voted by 580 travel experts from around the world.

The property’s spot as one of the best hotels in the world was announced this morning at a ceremony in London. It was also declared the best hotel in Oceania for 2023.

Hotels cannot nominate themselves to be considered for the list, instead, a carefully curated pool of travel writers, hoteliers and luxury travellers nominate the seven best hotels they’ve stayed at in the last two years in order of preference.

Each of the world’s regions has a chair who selects a voting committee to ensure a well-rounded knowledge of all geographies is represented amongst the 580 voters. The chair for Oceania for 2023 was Michael Harden, the Victorian and Tasmanian editor for Australian Gourmet Traveller. Apart from the regional chairs, all other voters are anonymous.

“This is a win for our team, our collaborators, our loyal guests and a win for Brisbane as a destination, and we are humbled to represent the Australian hotel industry on the world stage,” said The Calile Hotel’s co-owner Catherine Malouf, who attended the invite-only awards.

“There is no doubt The Calile Hotel has carved a name for itself and sparked a trend in ‘urban resorts’ with its bold architectural commitment, sustainable practises and by embracing its local and sub-tropic climate within an urban setting,” she said.

The 175-room hotel, about to celebrate its fifth birthday, features several event spaces, including an in-door conferencing space for up to 300 delegates in theatre and a spectacular rooftop space which can accommodate up to 180 for gala dinners.

“It takes an outstanding team to deliver outstanding guest experiences, and I want to take a moment to thank the hotel team – from our housekeepers to our pool attendants, maintenance and kitchen teams and our front of house guest service attendants – who go above and beyond to welcome our guests back through the arches time and time again,” said The Calile’s general manager, Rob Unson.

“This accolade is a testament to their professionalism, and tonight is a win for them.”

The “World’s 50 Best” brand already delivers lists celebrating the world’s best restaurants and bars. The World’s 50 Best Restaurants celebration was brought to Australia in 2017 by Tourism Australia as part of their Restaurant Australia campaign to raise the profile of the nation’s culinary scene on the global stage.

The 24-room Passalacqua in Moltrasio, Italy, topped the inaugural World’s 50 Best Hotels list. Hotels in Asia took out six of the top ten spots.

The Calile is part of the Collection by TFE Hotels brand.
