The Star appoints new CEO and managing director
The Star Entertainment Group has appointed the former head of Crown to run its business.

Subject to regulatory approval, Steve McCann will join The Star as its group CEO and MD in just a few weeks on July 8.

McCann was the CEO and MD of Lendlease for more than 12 years before joining Crown Resorts as the CEO and managing director in 2021.

Following Blackstone’s acquisition of Crown Resorts in June 2022, McCann departed the integrated resort group in September that year.

“Following a comprehensive search process, the board is very pleased to have secured a CEO of Steve’s calibre, experience and respect in the market,” said chair of The Star’s board, Anne Ward.

“Given his time with Crown, and previous long-standing leadership at Lendlease, he has the right credentials to lead The Star’s remediation program.

“His track record reflects his capability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders and lead meaningful transformational change and cultural renewal.

“This experience will be invaluable as we work towards rebuilding trust and expediting the sustainable transformation of The Star.”

The Star is going through a difficult period, having been found unsuitable to hold casino licences, due to regulatory failure, in both NSW and Queensland.

While currently undertaking transformation of its business, it is awaiting the outcome of a second independent inquiry ordered by the casino regulator in NSW and has not yet resolved court proceedings brought against it by Australia’s financial crimes watchdog AUSTRAC.

“I look forward to joining The Star at this critical time,” said McCann.

“I recognise that there are many complex issues and challenges for the company to address. I am committed to working with the board and the various stakeholders to help drive change, restore confidence and achieve a sustainable resolution.”
