The Australian Open remakes record for highest attendance at a Grand Slam
Wrapping up another year on Sunday, the Australian Open saw over 1.2 million fans through the gates.

The 2025 figures beat the record of more than 1.1 million fans set at last year’s tournament. Australia’s grand slam was already the best attended of the four global majors, with the next best being the US Open which had 1.049 million attendees in 2024.

Hotels saw high occupancy during the the slam, with 93 per cent of the city’s hotel rooms booked on Saturday January 18, the middle point of the event.

Meanwhile Marriott International, the official hotel partner of the tournament, reported that the five Marriott properties close to Melbourne Park, where the event is held, were running at 90 to 95 per cent occupancy for the entire two weeks of the main draw of the Australian Open.

Marriott reported bookings were up eight per cent year on year and the average daily rate per room had risen by more than 10 per cent compared to 2024.

“The Australian Open is a chance for us to engage with our growing base of Marriott Bonvoy members, now measuring 220 million globally,” said Marriott’s area vice president for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, Jason Nuell.

“We have seen an increase in member penetration compared to last year, with three quarters of stays coming from our loyal Marriott Bonvoy Members.

“We have also seen a growing number of stays coming from international guests, particularly from the US and China, highlighting the increasing global appeal of the tournament and our brand.”

The Australian Open is a big money spinner for the city more generally, with $533 million injected into the state’s economy from the 2024 event and a $3.14 billion economic impact over the last ten years.
