A decade in the making, the new Sydney Fish Market opened in Blackwattle Bay this week.

The largest market of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere is also a major visitor attraction, with the new facility expected to draw six million visitors a year.

The fish market includes daily weekday auctions for wholesale trade which move 50 tonnes of seafood each day, the Sydney Seafood School and event space.

The dedicated event space has views out over the water and can host standing events of up to 130 and seated meals for 72 attendees.

Experiences for groups are also available at the Sydney Seafood School – either through hand’s on cooking or by watching a cooking demonstration.

The market also offers various tours – including behind the scenes.

“The opening of the new Sydney Fish Market marks a defining moment not only for our organisation, but for Australia’s seafood industry,” said Sydney Fish Market CEO, Daniel Jarosch.

“This new precinct creates a global platform for our fishers, wholesalers and retailers, while offering visitors an authentic, immersive experience that celebrates the quality, diversity and sustainability of Australian seafood.

“Our vision is to create a destination people will return to again and again, not just to buy seafood, but to experience it.

“From watching live auctions, oyster shucking at Sydney Seafood School to tasting your way through its multitude of cuisines, we expect it to become a must-visit destination for locals and tourists both throughout Australia and around the globe.”

The new fish market was built beside the existing fish market and boasts a much more impressive architectural presence than its predecessor.

The market also includes several restaurants.
