As part of the agreement, Qantas has made a 15-year commitment to Melbourne Airport’s $3 billion third runway, which is expected to open in 2031.
The agreement supports the airport’s $4.5 billion international terminal expansion that will add five more gates suitable for widebody aircraft.
Qantas will also build a new international business lounge in a new area above Terminal 2. The lounge will be up to a third larger than the current lounge and has an anticipated opening in 2029.
The airline says it also has plans to base some of the 12 A350-1000LR aircraft it has ordered at Melbourne Airport, allowing Qantas to fly to new destinations from Melbourne. The A350s have a longer range than the aircraft they will replace and are more fuel efficient, resulting in lower carbon emissions. Qantas expects to start receiving the new aircraft in the 2028 financial year.
The agreement will also enable growth of Jetstar services out of Melbourne.
Qantas Group chief financial officer, Rob Marcolina, said the agreement will help both the airline and the airport grow while delivering a better passenger experience.
“From check-in to our lounge experience to our new fleet, we’re investing right across our business to reshape the way our customers travel to and from Melbourne,” said Marcolina.
“Basing some of our new A350-1000LRs in Melbourne will unlock a range of new destinations that aren’t possible today.
“Qantas and Jetstar currently fly to 17 international destinations from Melbourne and we look forward to increasing that number, helping to connect more Australians with the world, and growing Victoria’s tourism economy.”
Melbourne Airport’s CEO, Lorie Argus said the new agreement would yield “new opportunities for travellers and Victoria’s economy”.
“Our investment in a third runway opening in 2031, coupled with the Qantas Group’s 15-year agreement supporting its delivery, is a significant vote of confidence in Melbourne,” said Argus.
“The new Qantas International Business Lounge will deliver significant improvements for their premium customers and will boast one of the best views at the airport.”
