Melbourne to host international hepatitis conference in 2027
Melbourne has won the right to host the Global Hepatitis Summit 2027.

The event is expected to draw 800 delegates from Australia and around the world to discuss the latest developments in fighting liver diseases including viral hepatitis and liver cancer.

The successful bid was a collaboration between Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB), the Burnet Institute and the Doherty Institute.

“Melbourne offers an excellent environment for this event, with its state-of-the-art facilities, vibrant academic community and proven track record in hosting international conferences,” said Doherty Institute director Professor Sharon Lewin.

“This event will be a landmark moment in the global fight against hepatitis.”

Burnet Institute director Professor Brendan Crabb said the conference would give Australian researchers a global platform for their research in the field and an opportunity to collaborate with global colleagues. A similar sentiment was echoed by Victoria’s health minister, Mary-Anne Thomas, while the state’s economic growth and jobs minister, Danny Pearson, said hosting the conference would strengthen Melbourne’s reputation in this area of study.

Victoria’s tourism and major events minister, Steve Dimopoulos, highlighted the benefit to the visitor economy.

“By bringing experts from around the world to Melbourne for a four-day conference, we’re backing local hotels, restaurants and attractions who will reap the rewards – and this is just one of many global conferences coming to our city that will bring people from all around the globe.”

Melbourne is set to host several other international health meetings in the near future including the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2025 and the World Congress of Gastroenterology 2025.

“Melbourne continues to grow an international reputation as a hub for medical research conferences and we’re excited to add this summit to a fantastic pipeline of upcoming events in the field,” said MCB CEO Julia Swanson.
