Melbourne to get a COMO hotel

Como has been a well-established name in Melbourne as far back as 1847, but there’s a new COMO on the horizon.

In the 1800s, the glamorous Italianate-style mansion that bears the Como name was built on acreage down near the river at South Yarra.

More recently, a modern hotel of the same name, now part of the global Accor group, has been a hub to the fashionistas of Chapel Street in South Yarra. The Accor property, The Como Melbourne, is also a popular meetings and event destination.

And now, less than 10 minutes away on Melbourne’s grand boulevard, St Kilda Road, a COMO under the ultra-luxury hotel brand started in 1991 by Singaporean Christina Ong, is in the works.

COMO currently has 14 hotels and wellness resorts around the world. Australia has one: COMO – The Treasury, which opened in 2015, taking over the historic West Australian state treasury office and former GPO at the edge of Perth’s CBD.

The second Australian COMO is out of the Melbourne CBD, at 484 St Kilda Road, in a soon-to-be 17-level modern designer high rise, making use of Melbourne’s iconic “bluestone” basalt rock façade.

While the location is outside the city grid with its soaring skyscraper developments, this is a leafier location and a 15-minute tram ride to the city.

Replacing a 16-storey office tower, construction of the mixed use 17-level tower that will house COMO Melbourne began in August 2025.

The hotel will occupy nine floors, offering 102 rooms, with one whole floor dedicated to the brand’s Shambhala wellness centre. The top floors will be sold as 54 upscale private residences.

The property will have a dedicated meeting and event space, a 20m indoor lap pool, thermal spa and facilities for residential wellness retreats.

The hotel’s restaurant and café may also be used to provide a small group event or private dining space.

COMO Melbourne is scheduled to open in early 2028.
