The MCG Social and Economic Value Study showed the 100,000-seat Melbourne Cricket Ground hosted more than four million people in 2024, including over 620,000 people who travelled to the state to attend events at the stadium.
The MCG hosted 69 major events and supported the equivalent of 7,500 full time jobs. Of the $721 million economic impact, 52 per cent came from event organisation and $290 million was attributed to tourism from those visiting Melbourne from interstate or overseas.
When releasing the value study earlier this week, it was confirmed that there is a business case in the works for redevelopment of the stadium, including the Shane Warne Stand.
“We’re absolutely thrilled the Victorian Government is partnering with us to carry out the next stage of planning work and I’d like to thank [the] Premier and Minister Dimopoulos for their support,” said Melbourne Cricket Club CEO, Stuart Fox.
“I’d also like to thank the MCG Trust, led by the Honourable Steve Bracks, for their support in getting us to this point where we embark on the next stage of reimagining the MCG.”
The MCG has a plethora of venues for business events and has its own business events unit to facilitate gatherings at the stadium.
“The MCG is our economy’s home ground advantage – we want to keep it that way,” said Victoria’s premier, Jacinta Allan.
“We’re planning for the future so the ‘G can remain the best stadium in the world.”
